Strong Body, Strong Voice : Being BLK

A few weeks ago I was invited to CrossFit Soul as part of the Progenex East Coast BLK crew. This group was chosen by Progenex based on the fact that each individual embodies the values of the brand in their own way.

This particular group was assembled by Danny Lopez-Calleja, the owner of CrossFit Soul. I've known Danny and his wife Monik since we all started out in our respective CrossFit careers 5 or so years ago. I remember bumping into Danny at events, both of us wide-eyed and excited about this up and coming sport and all of the different athletes, brands, and businesses that were emerging as a result of CrossFit's existence.

Getting involved in CrossFit changed my perspective on health and fitness and it changed the course of my career. I am equally grateful for both, and I'm sure that each coach pictured above would say the same thing...

True Value Goes Beyond A Good Sale

The first thing you would notice upon walking into the Fashletics studio is a lengthy wall that is lined with workbenches. These benches are covered in tools that I've been collecting since I was a teenager. My favorite hammer lies in the center; its red paint is faded and the wooden handle is soft and worn from years of use. Works in progress, sketches on torn paper, and over a decade of ideas (some realized, others left behind) rest under scraps of metal and sand paper...

Less Talking, More Lifting

Ever since we were forced to pull our "LIVE LOVE LIFT" slogan from our line (thanks to Ann Taylor LOFT), people have been asking me:

"What's your new slogan going to be??"

And trust me, one thing I am never short on is words about how much I love to workout. I blog about it, I tweet about it, I talk and talk about it. I hammer inspiring words into metal for a living. I am the opposite of a "tortured artist".

I design based on what I love, what makes me feel good... and I have an abundance of good things to say about lifting.

So coming up with a new slogan was easy. I emailed several ideas to one my favorite Miami graphic artist and he answered back with some beautiful images coupled with my personal lifting mantras.

But here's the thing, sometimes images (just like actions) speak louder than words. I should just stop talking for a sec...

My Mom is a CrossFit Masters Competitor

Susan Wallis is 61 years old and competing at the Reebok CrossFit Games for the second year in a row in the 60+ age division. Susan was our Fashlete of the Month in April of 2012 at which point she had 6 Ironman World Championships under her belt and her sights set on the 2013 CrossFit Games. She continues to train and compete in both Triathlon and CrossFit... she's crushing both and so much more.

If you haven't seen any of the Masters compete, it is hard to describe the incredible level of athleticism. That's why I asked Susan's daughter Chrissy to guest blog for us. She's at the Games watching her mom compete this week and gives a truly vivid and heartfelt account of what it's like to watch this unbelievable group of athletes take the big stage.

My Mom is a CrossFit Masters Competitor

by: Chrissy Wallis Henry

If you grew up playing sports, you've probably experienced the overly excited parent: Cheering just a little too loud, celebrating just a little too hard, maybe even taking a "bad" call personally... I may not have kids yet, but all of a sudden, I can see exactly why they were so excited and worked up. Watching a family member- in my case, Mom, brings out some pretty intense emotions- good, excited, scared, relieved, and even loud! I even had another son apologize in advance for how loud he was going to be when his mom came out, to which I thankfully chuckled back, "Whew, because I was worried I'd yell you out of your seat". Side note, I'm pretty sure neither parent even heard us over the cheers from the other son, daughters, husbands, wives, etc!!

This is the second masters competition I've been lucky enough to attend, and this one is just as exciting as the first. The men and women here all look at LEAST 10 years younger than their age group on their shirt says, and the events year to year grow more and more challenging...
