Strong Body, Strong Voice : Being BLK

A few weeks ago I was invited to CrossFit Soul as part of the Progenex East Coast BLK crew. This group was chosen by Progenex based on the fact that each individual embodies the values of the brand in their own way.

This particular group was assembled by Danny Lopez-Calleja, the owner of CrossFit Soul. I've known Danny and his wife Monik since we all started out in our respective CrossFit careers 5 or so years ago. I remember bumping into Danny at events, both of us wide-eyed and excited about this up and coming sport and all of the different athletes, brands, and businesses that were emerging as a result of CrossFit's existence.

Getting involved in CrossFit changed my perspective on health and fitness and it changed the course of my career. I am equally grateful for both, and I'm sure that each coach pictured above would say the same thing...

Less Talking, More Lifting

Ever since we were forced to pull our "LIVE LOVE LIFT" slogan from our line (thanks to Ann Taylor LOFT), people have been asking me:

"What's your new slogan going to be??"

And trust me, one thing I am never short on is words about how much I love to workout. I blog about it, I tweet about it, I talk and talk about it. I hammer inspiring words into metal for a living. I am the opposite of a "tortured artist".

I design based on what I love, what makes me feel good... and I have an abundance of good things to say about lifting.

So coming up with a new slogan was easy. I emailed several ideas to one my favorite Miami graphic artist and he answered back with some beautiful images coupled with my personal lifting mantras.

But here's the thing, sometimes images (just like actions) speak louder than words. I should just stop talking for a sec...

Gain an understanding of how to put your strength into motion. This will give you a deeper appreciation for your body based what it is capable of, not just what it looks like...

Healthy Habits for a Sweet Tooth

by Maddy Curley

As a coach and a competitive athlete, I'm often asked about my diet. I actually have a very lenient diet and one that I think almost anyone could follow! So, here's how it came about. After gymnastics, I, like every gymnast, got "fat". Or at least what we gymnasts would consider fat: 5 to 20 pounds overweight. We are used to training four hours a day, six days a week all while in school. There really aren't enough hours in the day to overeat!  But then, the day comes when you quit or basically "retire" from the sport and suddenly the thousand calories you burned at practice that you are still eating pile on to your body. And boy does it come fast!

The first couple years after gymnastics I had no idea what to do with this extra weight. I started reading SELF, Women's Health and basically any magazine that said anything about losing weight to figure out how to eat. I also didn't have CrossFit at this time, so my exercise was a painfully boring 30 minutes on the elliptical or stair stepper.

I tried every annoying diet I read about, but if you have a sweet tooth, none of these diets are very helpful. Finally, one broken down day in the Barnes and Noble, I stumbled upon a book called Weigh Down while looking for a Bible study book. The cover had a skinny woman named Gwen Shamblin on it with big Tennessee hair. I opened it and she told me I was not a failure, that I was just trying too hard to control food. I'm in. Tell me what to do, Gwen.

Basically, the approach is SO SIMPLE. Just wait for hunger and stop eating before you're full. After nine weeks of trying this plan (and waiting for hunger is WAY harder than you think, but it is possible) I lost all my post gymnastics weight and felt like I wasn't constantly stressing about food. It was a very freeing feeling. There are still times when I get off and eat when I'm not hungry, but it's such a simple formula to fall back on and I've seen amazing results from people who stick to it.

So that's it.  That's why I'm known as the girl that carries around half a Snickers bar in my purse, because I want to stop before I'm full and sometime I just want a taste of something sweet.

Show Me What A Real Woman Looks Like

It's unfortunate that in 2014 most magazines and advertisements still have a pretty limited definition of what makes a woman beautiful. The so called "health" magazines are no better than the high fashion magazines. There is little variety of body type and a huge emphasis on skinny. It's no wonder that when we announced there would be a weigh-in for the deadlift competition at the Heraean Games (an all women's fitness competition) we were met with some adversity and a lot of anxiety... even though we were dealing with a group of competitive CrossFit women who know deep down that function trumps form.

I can't change mainstream media (at least not overnight). What I can control both as a business and as an individual, is the types of images that I choose to put out into the world. Magazines and advertisers may not be showing us what we want to see, but social media gives us all the power to flood the world with images of what we think is beautiful.

The women who competed at the Heraean Games on Saturday represent a type of beauty that you don't see in magazines or on runways, and I hope that they are proud of that fact. These women are my peers, my friends, my training partners, and my heroes. You may not find photos of women like this in Glamour, but that makes me love them even more.

Share your photos, show your strength, and above all -  be proud of what your body is capable of. You were made to do so much more in this life than to conform to someone else's definition of beautiful.
